When transacting with XRPL native XRP, the only cost is the standard network fee (10 drops). However, tokens issued on the XRP Ledger by third parties — stablecoins, wrapped assets, and custom tokens — can carry an additional fee set by the token issuer called a transfer fee.
A transfer fee is a percentage-based charge that applies when users transfer an issued token between themselves. The sender is debited slightly more than the recipient receives, and the difference is the transfer fee. For standard tokens, these extra tokens are burned and no longer tracked in the ledger.
Example: if ACME Bank issues a EUR stablecoin with a 1% transfer fee, and Alice wants to send Charlie 2 EUR.ACME, Alice must actually send 2.02 EUR.ACME.
Transfer fees must be between 0% and 100%. They do not apply when sending tokens directly to or from the issuing account itself. Network fees (10 drops) and transfer fees are independent and cumulative — both can apply to the same transaction.
